Warning: Imported bibliographies cannot be updated after import. Instead, manually add references or export, edit externally, and re-import as new bibliography.

Managing Citations in Criterion

What Is a Citation?

A citation in Criterion refers to a structured bibliographic entry that can be inserted inline in any paragraph field, including metadata, footnotes, and apparatus entries.

Each citation consists of:

  1. Label: Short tag visible in document (e.g., “Chastagnol 1970”)
  2. Reference: Full bibliographic content
  3. UUID: Unique identifier for internal management

Insert a Citation

1. Place cursor in text field (Critical Text, Critical, Page and Section notes)
2. Insert via:
  - Toolbar icon (citation button)
  - References > Add Citation
  - Context menu: Right-click
  - Keyboard: Ctrl+Shift+B (Win) / ⌘⇧B (Mac)

Search a Citation

From the list menu:

  • Search is case insensitive
  • Text searched at any point in quotations
  • Synchronous: Results filtered as you type (no button needed)
  • Right side shows count of matching citations; X icon clears search

Insert a Bibliography

How to Insert:

1. Place cursor in Bibliography section at desired location
2. Right-click in main text to open context menu
3. Select "Insert Bibliography"<note tip>The menu item is disabled if Bibliography section not present in document layout. Include via Format > Layout.</note>

Insertion Behavior:

  • Bibliography inserted at cursor position without overwriting existing content
  • Each citation appears in separate, visually distinct record
  • No duplicates included: each reference appears only once

Sorting Rules (automatic):

1. By author, alphabetical order (A→Z)
2. By publication date, chronological order (oldest→newest), for same author
3. By title, alphabetical order, if author and year identical

Updating the Bibliography:

Warning: Criterion does not automatically update bibliography when citations are added, modified, or removed.

To refresh:

1. Manually delete entire existing bibliography
2. Place cursor again in Bibliography section
3. Re-run "Insert Bibliography" command

Bibliography Formatting:
